Hadrian’s Wall was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987, an inscription expanded in 2005 to include the Antonine Wall in Scotland and the German limes as the “Frontiers of the Roman Empire”.

11. Illegal Metal Detecting
When undertaken without landowner permission or without a permit on designated (protected) lands, metal detecting is an illegal activity. Illegal metal detecting is one of the major challenges in protecting Hadrian’s Wall, as it jeopardises archaeological remains, strips finds of their contextual information, and undermines World Heritage Status.
