Application to SML Funds

This form should be used to all applications for School Research Funds.

Guidance Notes:

Research and Scholarship Fund (£1000 max for Staff):
This fund supports research work for research-active staff and School-related professional development activities for Teaching-focused staff.

You may apply for registration, economy/2nd class travel, accommodation, and meals (but not supplements for special conference dinners, receptions, etc.). Expenditure on meals must be modest and appropriate to the circumstances (£40 per day subsistence as a guide)

Please also upload a copy of the conference brochure (including, if applicable, details of your own paper). Applications will be approved by either Head of School or Director of Research. Claims must be made using the e-expenses system after approval has been granted.

We do not anticipate overspend. Please speak to the Director of Research or Research Coordinator if an overspend is envisioned.

The financial year runs from 1st August - 31st July. Applications to the Research and Scholarship Fund, and subsequent expense claims should be entered on to the e-expenses system no later than 15th July each year.

The Research and Scholarship Fund cannot be carried forward to the following year.

Research Contingency Fund (£1000 max):
Applications are welcome from all permanent members of staff for expenses required for REF submittable research and publication subsidies, where other funding options are not available or deadlines are too far away. Staff are not eligible for teaching buy out under this scheme. The Research Contingency Fund covers additional activities that enhance the research profile of the School. The fund is not to be used to cover overspend on the Research and Scholarship Fund. Draft applications must be discussed with the School’s Director of Research prior to submission and will be approved by the School’s Research Committee.

School Impact Fund (£1000 max):
Applications are welcome from all permanent members of staff for impact-related activity, where other funding options are not available or deadlines are too far away. Draft applications must be discussed with the School’s Impact Coordinator prior to submission. Applications will be considered by the School’s Research Committee.

Conference Fund (£1000 max):
Support for conferences hosted by the School. Draft applications must be discussed with the School’s Director of Research prior to submission. Applications will be considered by the School’s Research Committee.

Gold Open Access fee:
School contribution to Open Access charge if repository access cannot ensure HEFCE Open Access compliance.
